With the Big Pilot's Watch Shock Absorber XPL Toto Wolff x Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team, IWC has developed a watch that is engineered to withstand the enormous stresses and strains of Formula One™ – in the car cockpit and in the pit lane. Limited to 100 pieces, it combines IWC’s patented SPRIN-g PROTECT® shock absorber system with a distinctively technical design inspired by the team’s black and green color scheme. Developed by IWC’s engineering division XPL, the SPRIN-g PROTECT® system takes movement shock protection to a new level. A cantilever spring cushions the movement inside the case, protecting it from the g-forces generated by impacts on the case of the watch. In impact tests conducted at the Cavendish Laboratory at the Cambridge University, protected movements have survived forces from accelerations in excess of 30,000 g. The spring is designed with a special form and manufactured from a Bulk Metallic Glass (BMG). Thanks to its amorphous microstructure, this highly engineered material is significantly more elastic than conventional metals. For this limited edition, the BMG spring has been coated with Petronas-green Super-LumiNova® and glows in the dark. The case and the crown of this watch are made of Ceratanium®, and IWC-developed material that combines the lightness and robustness of titanium with a hardness similar to ceramic. The black dial features a grainy technical structure, which is stamped into the brass base with a special tool. The triangular black hands also feature Super-LumiNova® around their edges. The watch is powered by the IWC-manufactured 32101 caliber with an automatic winding system and power reserve of 120 hours. The plates, bridges and oscillating mass are blackened to match the all-black design, and the movement is visible through a tinted sapphire glass case back. The watch is fitted with an integrated Petronas green rubber strap. A black rubber strap with textile inlay is included as an accessory.

Give your watch a quick check on a regular basis, wiping down the face and bracelet with a soft cloth, checking the leather on a strap, and making sure that the strap or bracelet is firmly attached to the watch face. Also, while many watches are water resistant, few are truly waterproof, so if you find that moisture or dust has penetrated the case of your watch, bring it into your local Ben Bridge store where we can have one of our watchmakers clean it out for you.

Our best advice on watch maintenance is to never attempt do-it-yourself repairs, no matter how handy you are or how good the instructions are on Youtube. Watches are super complex little machines and only an expert watchmaker should be trusted to get a watch back into working condition. Attempts by an untrained repair person may seriously damage the watch and can even invalidate factory warranties.

In general, having your watch checked regularly by your Personal Jeweler or watchmaker and serviced according to the manufacturer's guidelines should keep it in excellent shape.
